Dervio - Torre del Castello di Orezia (Tower of Castle of Orezia)

Dervio - Torre del Castello di Orezia (Tower of Castle of Orezia)

Perched on a cliff overlooking the village, the castle of Orezia was built in the late Middle Ages to block the road to the Varrone valley. The tower is still in good condition and is flanked by the ruins of some old houses. The earliest records date back to 1039, when it withstood a prolonged siege by the armies of the three Larian parishes. The fortified castle stood in a commanding position and the ruins of its walls give an idea of how huge it was. It was part of a series of fortifications built on the shores of lake Como to defend the area against barbarian incursions from Rhaetia. Its purpose was to control the old road, on the left side of the Varrone valley, between Dervio and Piazzo di Casargo at the entrance to the Sassina valley.
